Amadeus meets Little Women in this irresistibly delightful historical novel by award-winning author Stephanie Cowell.” - Powell’s Books

Marrying Mozart is a cozy, character-driven story that closely follows the lives of four sisters and their various roles in Mozart’s life. Set in 1777 in Mannheim, a young Mozart encounters the charming and musically gifted Weber family, and his complex relationships with each sister – Josefa, Aloysia, Constanze, & Sophie – greatly impact his future work.

This novel paints an inviting portrait of 18th century domestic life for the hungry musician: rainy evenings spent gathered around the harpsichord, sharing wines and cakes, and singing late into the night. Josefa and Aloysia, the older sisters, begin their careers by vocalizing with their father’s friends and eventually ascend to major roles in Mozart’s operas. Aloysia in particular captivates the young composer with both the beauty of her figure and of her voice, sparking a passionate, although ultimately unfulfilled romantic connection.

The younger sisters, Constanze and Sophe, initially remain in the background, often observing upon the emotional drama that unfolds around them. But after a sudden family tragedy forces the Webers to move and open a boarding house, their lives begin to shift. It’s here that Constance, or “Stanzi” as she is affectionately called, steps forward. Eventually it is she - not her glamorous older sister - who wins over Mozart’s heart.

Stephanie Cowell, a trained lyric soprano herself, knows how to express moments of deep musical beauty. Her depictions of rehearsals, performances, and the inner workings of the human voice feel deeply authentic. More than just a romance or biographical sketch, Marrying Mozart is a tender exploration of sisterhood, ambition, and heartbreak – how music weaves through each of these themes, and how love, in all its forms, can influence a life.

This book doesn’t aim to tell Mozart’s full story or even his most famous musical works. Instead, she narrows in on his early pivotal moments, offering a richly drawn glimpse into the women who influenced him in lasting ways. The result is a thoughtful, immersive novel that celebrates music, family, and the quiet forces that shape even the most legendary of lives.
